Letters of Recommendation
Applicants should have their letters of recommendation (LOR) submitted to AMCAS as soon as possible as LOR are required of all applicants who are invited for an interview. A letter from a pre-medical committee (preferably including the individual letters that are used in the summary) is highly desirable.
For students attending a school without a pre-medical committee, two letters of recommendation are required from professors who know you well and who have taught you in a formal classroom setting. One letter should be from a faculty member in your most recent major or degree-granting department and the other may be from any professor of your choice. An applicant may submit additional letters of recommendation, but the Committee prefers that you send no more than three (3) letters in total.
Supplemental applications without letters of recommendation are considered incomplete if they are not submitted prior to your interview date and will not be presented to the Committee on Admissions for review.
Letters of Recommendation (LOR) should be submitted through one of the databases listed below--we will no longer accept paper recommendations:
- AMCAS Letter Service
More information about this process is available on the AMCAS students web site.
- Interfolio

- VirtualEvals
VirtualEvals is a secure, web-based system through which health professions advisors can transmit letters of evaluation to health professions schools. Over 250 undergraduate schools use this service.
If your letters are being transmitted to us by your undergraduate advising office, it is possible that office is using VirtualEvals. Once your letters are posted to VirtualEvals, they will be downloaded by AMCAS and made available to UNC School of Medicine. If you have a question about whether or not your advising office uses VirtualEvals, please contact your undergraduate advising office.
