I am very excited to be a UNC SOM advisor! Here is a little bit about my background. I grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and went to Notre Dame for college. Upon graduating from the Dome, I joined a volunteer teaching program affiliated with AmeriCorps which sent me to Charlotte, NC to teach middle school for 2 years. I loved teaching and it was actually a difficult choice whether to attend medical school or continue teaching. However, I decided to give it a go and enrolled at UNC SOM and graduated in 2002. It took me 5 years to graduate from UNC because I did a year of research between my third and fourth years. While I started out medical school convinced I would become a Pediatric Oncologist, I ended up very intrigued by Emergency Medicine and so went on to do my residency in EM. I dragged my poor Texan wife (who went to undergrad at UNC and thought North Carolina was the chilly North) to Boston for four years of residency, and upon completing was thrilled to be offered an opportunity to return to Chapel Hill. I have been an attending here for 3 years and in addition to clinical work focus most of my energy on educational endeavors. I am the residency director for the EM Residency at UNC, and participate in the medical student courses that come through the ED. I also do research and education in enhancing the care of geriatric patients in the ED. My wife (who is getting her PhD in Spanish Literature) and I have a 2 year old son, Patrick, and an 8 month old little girl, Charlotte. |
