Clinical/Research/Medicine Related Interests

I practice general obstetrics and office gynecology. One of my greatest loves is still labor and delivery. I enjoy caring for families through pregnancy. Additionally, I staff the gynecologic ultrasound unit in the department of radiology. I am interested in the evaluation of utilization of new ultrasound technologies for more accurate and timely diagnosis of various gynecologic diseases, particularly the use of 3-dimensional and reconstructed images.

With regards to medical education, I am interested in the development and testing of innovative methods and technologies for medical education. Additionally, I am interested in the subject of professionalism development and how to instill it into future physicians. I am intimately involved with clinical and formal didactic teaching of medical students and residents. I feel all clinical settings are appropriate arenas for modeling, mentoring and instructing. My foremost research interests involve developing, testing and promoting effective methods for teaching in different clinical settings in order to best prepare students and residents for true-to-life practice. In light of the duty hour limitations, efficient transfer of information and teaching models will serve an important function in medical education. These must be validated and tested using sound methodology.

Also, because of duty hour restrictions and curriculum demands, residents and medical students have even less time to learn about practical aspects of the practice of medicine including topics such as practice management, medico-legal aspects of medicine, professionalism, teambuilding skills, life balance and personal growth. They have very little time to explore how to integrate their careers into their lives. These are topics which I would like to focus on..

Alice's background in her own words

I was born in Taipei, Taiwan, land of hot sticky summers, exotic smells and scrumptious dumplings and was raised in Memphis, Tennessee, land of hot sticky summers, famous pork ribs and Graceland. I have great memories of a fun-filled childhood with my two brothers, to whom I’m very close.

I spent four years in Boston getting a degree in Applied Mathematics. I still do love numbers because they are logical and concrete. I started college thinking I would study business, but my love of biology, science and people drew me to medicine. I then returned to my hometown for medical school and residency and stayed on at UT Memphis on the faculty in the Department of Ob/Gyn before coming to UNC.

At UNC, I divide my time between my clinical duties, seeing patients in clinic, interpreting gynecologic ultrasound and staffing labor and delivery and my educational duties, running the clerkship, participating in the preclinical curriculum as well and working with our outstanding residents. My husband Tom is an obstetrician as well. We love to travel and have been to Barbados, Scotland, Anguilla, and Italy to name a few destinations. We have two little ones, Cole, age 7, and Gwyneth, age 5, at this writing. They certainly keep us busy and entertained.
