    Tyler Warmack (MS2)

How do you manage to stay balanced and healthy in spite of the busy med school schedule?

After about the first block and testing different study methods I have found that “on-weeks” and “off-weeks” work the best for me.  During an “off-week” I still do required work and keep up with school, but I make sure I have plenty of free time do things I enjoy such as rock climbing, working on my house and chicken coop, keeping up with friends and family, taking naps, and having dinner with my small group.  During an “on-week” I pick the pace up a little with school work, but I don’t go crazy and am still able to have time to enjoy life inside and outside of school.

Why do you want to become an advocate and what three qualities will you bring to the job?

During my first year I have been faced with several significant challenges that have tested my ability to balance life and medical school and have gained a profound appreciation for the staff and support system we have at the UNC SOM. I would like join that same team as an advocate and hopefully I can help make the transition into medical school an easier process for incoming MS1s.  I find I am able to smile in the face of adversity, improvise quickly, work well with a team, and generally enjoy life; all of which I think are important qualities and skills I can offer as an advocate.

What’s the most important piece of advice you would give to an MS1 at the beginning of the year?

I think my most important piece of advice to incoming MSs would be to try new and different study methods, even if you already think you know how you study best. The worst that can happen is failure, but failure itself is success if we learn from it.

Tell us your favorite joke (PG-13 max, please).

Q: What did the elephant say to the naked man? A: How do you breathe out of that thing!?!?

If you could have any super power, what would it be? What would you have people call you?

If I could have any super power it would be the ability to heal and I would certainly have people call me, but probably not toll-free (if that is taken I will be Wolverine).

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Sushi!
