Defining and delivering the highest standard of hospital care to older adults
Debra Bynum, MD, Director of the Acute Care for the Elderly Inpatient Unit at UNC Hospitals
Nursing station on the ACE unit, October 2007

The UNC Acute Care of the Elderly service provides interdisciplinary care to acutely ill older patients with complex medical problems who are at particular risk for complications during hospitalizations. Using a comprehensive team approach to medical care, the ACE Unit strives to reduce complications of frail elders during their hospital stays and to maintain or improve their functional status prior to discharge.

Geriatricians (medical doctors trained and experienced in the care of elderly patients) care for patients. Fellows (physicians who are in training in geriatric medicine), residents, and medical students are often a crucial part of the team.
