Statewide Coalition to Address Older Adult Mental Health Needs

In June of 2011, the CGEC, the NC Division of Aging and Adult Services, NC Division of MH/DD/SAS, NC Healthy Aging Research Network, and UNC Institute on Aging brought together more than 30 stakeholders from across North Carolina to establish the NC Mental Health and Aging Coalition (MHAC).  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that approximately 20% of individuals age 55 and older suffer from some form of mental health issue, with depression being the most prevalent problem. These mental health issues are often serious, under-recognized, and untreated. The MHAC will work collaboratively to address the mental health needs of its older citizens.
