Communicating Cancer Health Information Workshop
In partnership with Greensboro AHEC and Wake AHEC, the Carolina Community Network (CCN) hosted two exciting workshops on communicating cancer health information in November 2008. The mission of the CCN is to reduce breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer disparities among adult African-American by leveraging university-community relationships and the community based participatory research expertise at UNC-Chapel Hill to enhance and extend cancer education and research.
Communicating Cancer Health Information was the first of a series of workshops intended for the CCN partners and other community members interested in building their capacity and skills to implement evidence based initiatives to address health disparities for breast, prostate and colorectal cancer.
The first of two separate workshops was held at Braswell Library in Rocky Mount, followed by another workshop in Greensboro at the Wesley Long Community Hospital Education Center. Participants learned current information on breast, prostate and colorectal cancer and techniques for utilizing media opportunities to further program goals, such as participating in interviews and writing press releases. In March 2009, the CCN sponsored its second workshop, which provided education on the use of community-based participatory research (CBPR) to address health issues. Two separate workshops were held within the Greensboro and Area L AHEC region.
Co-sponsors of the workshops were NCI Cancer Information Services, Carolina Well Program, Project CONNECT and UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. To receive more information about upcoming workshops, contact Dorothea Brock at Wake AHEC or Brandolyn White at Greensboro AHEC.
