Greensboro Bariatric Symposium Reaches 109 Participants
Greensboro AHEC partnered with Wesley Long Community Hospital/Central Carolina Surgery Bariatric Surgery Program to provide the 2010 Bariatric Symposium. On May 7, 2010, one hundred nine health care professionals from across the state, including physicians, nurses, dietitians, psychologists, and allied health professionals, attended the event. David Newman, MD, FACS, director of bariatric surgery for Moses Cone Health System and Jeannie Wilson, RN, BSN, MHA, bariatric surgery program specialist, served as co-chairs of the planning committee. Local expert faculty presented on a variety of topics including medical and surgical options to treat morbid obesity, pharmacological and psychological interventions, and dietary management of obesity. Three patients also provided testimonies regarding their personal weight loss challenges and interventions. At the conclusion of the activity, an overwhelming number of participants expressed a need for more education on bariatric care. The planning committee decided to make this symposium an annual event and will reconvene in the fall to begin organizing “The Second Annual Bariatric Symposium.”
Some participant feedback included:
“Great job pulling together diverse topics and speakers in one day…speakers were engaging and informative.”
“I hope this becomes an annual event – would definitely attend next year!"
“Good mix of topics – nutrition, psychological, medical, pharmacology and the importance of all in bariatric treatment.”
