Morganton Practice Reaches “Meaningful Use” Criteria

Primary care practices across the state that work with the NC AHEC regional extension center (REC) have begun meeting the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) “Meaningful Use” criteria. (Please see the accompanying article for a full discussion of the REC.) In addition to the improved use of EHRs, practices reaching this landmark receive monetary incentives from the federal incentive program.

In early August 2011, Mountain View Pediatrics, located in Morganton, North Carolina, earned and received its incentive payment for using its electronic health records system to meet these criteria.

As part of the NC AHEC REC, the Northwest AHEC REC began offering its services during 2010 to practices in its 17-county region in which Mountain View Pediatrics is located. Jane Simmons, practice manager, explained the role that the Northwest AHEC REC played: “They provided excellent guidance on enrollment in the incentive program, with step-by-step instructions for making our way through the maze of technicalities. I only wish their services had been available to us in 2008 when our search for an EHR began. We made an excellent choice on our own, but they can provide the guidance needed to get the process started and get physicians on board. We look forward to continuing to collaborate with the Northwest AHEC REC on achieving the requirements for the remaining Medicaid incentive payments in the four years to come.”
