Bacon Receives National Diversity Leadership Award

On September 16, 2011, NC AHEC Director Thomas J. Bacon, DrPH, received the first National Association of Medical Minority Educators (NAMME) Diversity Leadership Award at the NAMME National Conference in Marina de Rey, CA.

Bacon was recognized for consistently making significant contributions toward institutionalizing the mission and goals of NAMME and its commitment to diversity. His exemplary leadership in manifesting the ideals of diversity through innovative, dynamic and/or practical action has been demonstrated on the state and national levels. Bacon fosters the cause of diversity by promoting and engaging in informed dialogue and actions.

Additionally, he has demonstrated leadership in the state and national AHEC organization by leading and supporting efforts to enhance, recruit and retain members of diverse groups in the health professions. The NC AHEC Program continues to provide some of the largest numbers of precollege diversity programs, reaching approximately 25,000 individuals a year.
