Autism Education for Families and Mental Health Professionals
Northwest AHEC received this letter from Sharon Barlow, BS, about her experience with an autism program that continues to be successful in our region. Barlow works as an Early Intervention Service Coordinator with the Children’s Developmental Services Agency in Morganton.
“As an Early Interventionist, I have had lots of opportunities provided by Northwest AHEC, but one of the most amazing ways that Northwest AHEC has impacted my life was around 1990. A parent and I wrote a grant to provide quality information for families regarding autism. We had no idea the grant would be funded, so we had high expectations and put together a proposal that would include Temple Grandin, as keynote speaker. Well, we were approved for funding and were perplexed about how to inform the public and provide the quality of conference that families and professionals would find worthwhile. Staff at the Northwest AHEC came to our rescue and provided us with brochures and resources we never knew possible. The workshop was fabulous, and even years later we meet families who express how much the workshop meant to them. I will be forever grateful to the Northwest AHEC for believing in us and our desire to provide quality information and support for families and professionals in the Hickory area. Thank you Northwest AHEC—keep up the good work!”
