Matthew Lau, health careers student
“Since I was a child, I have been intrigued by the idea of becoming a health professional. During my Summer Enrichment in Mathematics and Science (SEMS) Program experience provided by Greensboro AHEC, my interest in pursuing graduate studies and medical schools intensified greatly. My interests include studying the genetic basis of disease and the genetic mechanisms, and the SEMS Program prepared me well in order to reach that goal. The program helped develop my interest in the field of genetics, as well as gave me an overview of health careers. Now that I am familiar with the amount of dedication and hard work essential to project advancement, I am more focused on my goal of becoming an excellent health care professional than I ever have been.”
Editor’s note: In July 2008, Matthew Lau completed the UNC Medical Education Development (MED) Program, an 8-9 week intensive educational experience sponsored by the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry at UNC-Chapel Hill. It offers a challenging, structured summer curriculum at the level of professional education to advanced pre-professional students.
