Dr. McLean came to UNC Chapel Hill in August, 2000 to become the 5th Chair of the Department of Allied Health Sciences in the School of Medicine; and in 2005 she was named the School of Medicine’s Associate Dean for Allied Health Education. In this role, she has overall administrative responsibility for the seven nationally accredited divisions that make up the Department of Allied Health Sciences at UNC Chapel Hill. Together, these divisions offer a total of 13 B.S. M.S. and doctoral degrees, in the allied health disciplines of clinical laboratory science, occupational science, physical therapy, radiological science, rehabilitation counseling and psychology; and speech and hearing science.
Dr. McLean came to Chapel Hill from the University of Connecticut, where she had served as Director of the A.J. Pappanikou Center for Disability Studies from 1996 – 2000. From 1977 – 1996, Mclean was on the research faculty at the University of Kansas, where she was an investigator with the Kansas Mental Retardation Research Center. From 1989-1994, she served as Director of the Kansas University Affiliated Program at Parsons, and from 1994-1996 as the Director of the Schiefelbusch Institute for Life Span Studies at Parsons. Dr. McLean’s 30 year research career has focused on early communication development in children who are typically developing and those with significant disabilities. McLean has written and directed numerous research, training and demonstration grants over the years, with funding from the USDE, NIH, NIDRR, and HHS/ACF. She currently serves as Treasurer of the Southern Association Of Allied Health Deans; and is a member of the Board of Directors of the national Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions.
