Students who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) face a plethora of challenges when accessing and engaging with academic materials. With the development of the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) it is essential that students in grades K-12 be provided a vocabulary that addresses a variety of vocabulary and communicative functions demanded by the standards. This presentation will address the ways in which core vocabulary can be selected and expanded to meet the academic demands of the new CCSS. During the presentation, participants will be provided a free resource on core vocabulary that can be used as a low-tech system, but can also be taken and applied to an array of high-tech systems.
