New Voices School-Based Consulting Program
Under the Direction of the Center for Literacy & Disability Studies, UNC-CH

The purpose of the project is to develop and carry out school-based consulting services with one primary and two secondary goals. The primary goal is to address the needs of individual students with significant disabilities in the Chatham, Durham, Orange and Wake Counties and the Chapel Hill/Carrboro City Schools. The secondary goals are: (1) to build the capacity of the staff within the 5 school systems; and (2) gather data regarding the needs of the 5 school systems to inform future decisions regarding service delivery for the New Voices Foundation.

Go to the New Voices Foundation website to learn more about their mission and their numerous projects.

Teacher Resources
During classroom visits, the NV Consultation Team provides support focusing on communication and literacy for students with significant disabilities.  The NV team works directly with students, teachers and therapists.  During visits, the consultants provide resources to summarize what was done, along with activities to try.

Visit the New Voices Teacher Resources Page for descriptions, downloadable lessons and tips.

Teacher Trainings

The NV Consultation Program offers teacher trainings based on classroom needs.  Many of the classrooms on the project are beginning to use Meville to Weville: An Early Language & Literacy Program (Ablenet Inc., www.ablenetinc.com).  This program has been designed for students with significant disabilities who are very beginning communicators, readers and writers.
