Shauna Hay, M.P.H., MT(ASCP) Adjunct Faculty Education BS in Clinical Laboratory Science from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Master’s of Public Health Degree in Public Health Leadership from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Teaches/Directs Immunology Laboratory, Clinical Laboratory Analysis Laboratory, Clinical Chemistry Laboratory. Research/Scholarly Interests Bacterial contamination and screening in blood products; Epidemiological studies of Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura; Transfusion Medicine and Hemostatis Clinical Trials. Other Since 2001, Ms. Hay has been the Research Associate for Dr. Mark Brecher, Director of McClendon Clinical Laboratories and the Transfusion Medicine Service at UNC Hospitals. Prior to this position, she worked in the Transfusion Medicine Service as a bench technologist and for a biomedical company as a Technical Service Associate. Teaches/Directs Biochemistry, Laboratory Mathematics, Clinical Laboratory Analysis Laboratory, Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Chemistry Laboratory, Clinical Laboratory Education, Quality Assurance, Molecular Techniques Practicum, Clinical Chemistry Practicum, Current Topics in Clinical Medicine. CLS Safety Advisor. Research/Scholarly Interests Laboratory Diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis. Subclinical Hypothyroidism and the risk of MI and Stroke in Post-Menopausal Women. Experience Faculty member since 1983. Other Dr. LeGrys' research and professional service is focused on standardizing sweat testing for the diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis. She has published numerous journal articles on the topic and consults with laboratories worldwide. She serves as the chairperson of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) sweat testing document and she developed sweat analysis proficiency testing and accreditation guidelines with the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Dr. LeGrys is a member of an expert consensus panel of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation responsible for developing diagnostic criteria for CF in the era of newborn screening and serves as a consultant to the North Carolina Newborn Screening advisory panel. Teaches/Directs Molecular Techniques Practicum (for CLS students), Immunology, Clinical Laboratory Methods, Principles of Molecular Diagnostics, Applications of Molecular Diagnostics, Molecular Applications Techniques Laboratory, Research Design and Method Evaluation, Molecular Methods Clinical Practicum (for MDS students). Research/Scholarly Interests Course development for the Masters of Molecular Diagnostic Science within the CLS department, the majority of which will be taught on-line. This program has been developed to prepare professionals to become competent in performance, interpretation, evaluation, and validation of various molecular-based assays in the clinical laboratory. Evaluation of cell surface markers, using flow cytometry, associated with acute and chronic symptoms in asthmatic children, and development of predictive markers for exacerbation of symptoms in children with asthma. Other research interests include evaluation of various cell surface markers currently used for diagnosis of hematological malignancies in humans, for use in veterinary medicine to diagnose similar malignancies.
