Course Formats

All on-line courses are instructor-led with readings from textbooks and biomedical journals. On-line content may include taped lectures and PowerPoint© slides. Email, listservs, and chat-rooms allow students to interact regularly with faculty and other students and participate in the virtual classroom. MMDS students begin courses as a cohort, advancing through the sequence over a 18-month time period.

All courses have fixed dates for completing assignments and taking examinations. Classes follow the University's academic calendar and use the Blackboard Learning System© as support.

Two courses, CLSC 610 and CLSC 720L, include hands-on laboratory experiences conducted on UNC-Chapel Hill's campus during a block of time at the end of the semester.

MMDS students must complete a six-month clinical practicum (CLSC 740 and 750) at a site affiliated with the program. The clincial practicum is completed during the Spring semster of Year 1 and the first Summer Session of Year 2.  The MMDS program is responsible for assigning students to clinical practice sites.
