In the fall of 2014, the Division of CLS established the CLS Service Society for CLS students. Sam Mason (CLS '15) was appointed as the Society President for the academic year with Ms. Lisa Cremeans serving as the faculty advisor and Dr. Tara Moon working with students on Facebook and Twitter posts. The Service Society gave students an opportunity to work together with fellow students in a fun and social environment that helped promote the CLS profession, provide services to the community, and recruit future CLS students. Students volunteered for a wide variety of activities including:

  • Conducting tours of the laboratory for interested students
  • Speaking to groups of prospective students
  • Painting the CUBE in the Pit to advertise a CLS recruitment event
  • Participating in high school recruitment events

Students in the CLS Service Society made significant contributions to the Division of CLS, particularly in the area of recruitment. Prospective students were most eager to talk to current students to get their perspective on the program. The enthusiasm of our current students is the best advertisement for the program. Twelve students earned a total of 10 service points and were recognized at graduation with special silver cords. The Service Society received official recognition as a student organization by the Office of Student Organizations at UNC Chapel Hill in June 2015.
