UNC Hospitals Laboratories

All laboratories are on the first floor of the main hospital.

UNC Family Medicine (Phlebotomy Clinical Practice)

The UNC Family Medicine clinic is near the corner of Manning Drive and 15-501. You may take any of the buses that go around Bowles Drive; there's an entry to FP from the parking loop that is closest to Manning. Ask at the front desk for directions to the lab.  Please arrive by 8:15.

Ambulatory Care Center (Phlebotomy Clinical Practice)

The Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) is at the corner of Columbia St and Mason Farm Rd; you can go there directly or there is a regular shuttle from the front of the hospital. You should report to the ACC lab (ground floor) at 8:30 am, but depending on their staffing level you may be sent to another lab (main hospital, women's or children's).

VA and Duke Parking

Plan to arrive early!  The parking lot fills quickly and you will need to allow time for a shuttle bus ride.  Also, note that Duke Molecular is located at a different facility.  See below for directions.
Go north on Hwy. 15-501 from Chapel Hill.  Take exit #107 ("Duke University West Campus") and turn right onto Cameron Blvd.  At the stop light turn left onto Erwin Rd.  After several intersections you will pass the VA on your left and Duke on your right.  Continue on Erwin to the intersection with Anderson St.  Turn left on Anderson.  Cross over the Durham Freeway (Anderson St. will become Fifteenth St.).  At the third light turn right onto Hillsborough Rd.  The overflow lot is on the left (across from Erwin Square).

The lot is served by shuttle buses.  Be sure to get on the shuttle for "Duke North" if you are going to the main hospital or to the VA.  Note that part of the Special Hematology rotation is at Duke South -- see below.

Alternate directions: you may also take Erwin all the way from Chapel Hill.  It will connect with Cameron Blvd via a roundabout -- go under 15-501 and then turn left, back onto Erwin.  Follow directions above.

OR take the Durham Freeway (exit 108B from 15-501) to the Fulton St. exit (#15B).  Fulton St. will end at Erwin; the VA will be on your right and Duke Hospital will be directly in front of you.  Turn left onto Erwin and continue as above.

Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center Laboratories

Enter the hospital through the "Patient Entrance".  Go through 2 sets of doors, then right through accordion doors to the elevator.  Labs are on the 3rd floor.

Duke University Medical Center Laboratories

Special Hematology: located at Duke South. From the H lot, take the H-3 bus to Duke South/Clinics. When you are at the front entrance to Duke South you will see an older building to the left (assuming you are facing the entrance). Go to the older looking building and take Entrance 2. Special Heme is down the steps to the left. Rm 0216 Duke South, Orange Zone.

Coagulation, Microbiology: From the Duke North lobby, walk straight past the information desk on the right.  Continue to the right of the elevators and take the hall toward the cafeteria.  Walk past the cafeteria entrance and along the "Garden Walk" to the CARL building.  Take the elevator to the first floor and turn right.  The Core laboratory is on your right.  Microbiology is on your left.

Transfusion Medicine: From the Duke North lobby, look for signs to the Emergency Department.  You will walk toward the right down a hallway.  About halfway down the hallway, there is an entrance to the ED on the left with signs for the Transfusion Service.  Follow those signs to the lab.

Duke University Health System Core Lab -- Molecular Techniques

Take 15-501 to I-85 North.  Take US 501N/ Duke St. exit (176B) toward Roxboro.  Go about 1.4 miles, and turn right onto W. Carver St.  After crossing Roxboro Rd turn left onto Ben Franklin Blvd.  The building is all the way down on the left.  (The address is 4425 Ben Franklin Blvd.)

Laboratory Corporation of America -- RTP

Take I-40 to the Durham Freeway (Hwy 147).  Follow Durham Freeway north to the Alexander Dr. exit.  Go right on Alexander Dr., past Miami Blvd.  Take the next right into the LabCorp parking lot.  Go to the 2-story building (the one on the left).  When you go for safety orientation, identify yourself at the desk and ask for Jeff Matheney.  You will be given instructions at this orientation for entering the lab during your rotation.
