The North Carolina HPV Vaccination Project.

We are conducting a human papillomavirus vaccine demonstration project in North Carolina. Our goal is to engage in collaborative research with a number of labs across the state. As an effort to evaluate changes due to the introduction of the HPV vaccine, we are establishing a cervical cytology and biopsy record database before the introduction of the HPV vaccine, and follow the cytology and biopsy trends for a five year period or more following introduction of the HPV vaccine. This will allow us to map changes in cytology screening and prevalence of disease in cytology and pathology specimens.
Essentially, we are looking to link:

  1. The annual basis cytology data
  2. The annual basis pathology summaries of those screened, and disease incidence and prevalence
  3. Additional data to enhance this study will be added as the project develops.

The North Carolina Pap Smear Out Reach Program.

Rationale: With current knowledge and available resources cervical cancer can be prevented, yet there are isolated areas in North Carolina where cervical cancer incidence is among the highest in the country. The purpose of this project is to identify women at high risk for cervical cancer and provide them with a self collection kit to screen for High Risk HPV and precancerous changes.

International Projects:

“Effect of Female Diaphragm on Female Human Papilloma Virus Infection and Cervical Neoplasia.” This is an ancillary study of HPV/cervical neoplasia for a planned, randomized clinical trial (RCT) of female barrier methods. The purpose is to examine the effect of female diaphragm use on the risk and natural history of HPV infection and cervical neoplasia in High Risk Patients in Madagascar. This is a collaborative project involving the Madagascar National Institute of Public and Community Health Hospital (NIPCH), Joseph Ravoahangy Andrianavalona (HJRA) Cytology and Pathology Laboratories in Madagascar, and UNC Departments Epidemiology and Allied Health Sciences (Cytotechnology Program). The completion date for this project is 2007.
