Dear Allied Health Sciences Students,

Members of the Allied Health Sciences financial aid committee have decided to allow additional time for you to complete applications for the departmental financial assistance awards for the fall 2009 semester. It was brought to our attention that a number of students had difficulty finding the application form on the website.  Links to the applications for the following three awards are embedded below:

June C. Alcott Fellowship - focusing on a history of community service;
Thorpe/Mitchell Diversity Leadership Award – focusing on recruitment of underrepresented minority students with tremendous leadership potential; and
UNC Hospitals Volunteer Association's Scholarship – focusing on volunteerism.

Please complete and submit these forms by May 29, 2009, to Maryann Koziel at maryann_koziel@med.unc.edu.

The June C. Allcott Fellowship

In her life, June C. Allcott was a gardner of friendships.  She explored the world as traveler, weaver of baskets, culinary adventurer, designer of jewelry and clothes, guidance counselor at UNC, computer explorer, music and art lover, and friend.  She had a particular place in her heart for those interested in the health fields.  June developed a keen sense of the characterstics and values that naturally inbue people who make a difference in the helping professions.  The June C. Allcott Fellowship identifies students who exemplify the ability to make helping connections with people.  The award underscores the importance that the Division of Medical Allied Health places on the value of community service.

Two June C. Allcott Fellowships in Allied Health are awarded to those students who apply and demonstrate exemplary, ongoing, or new community service.  Financial need will be considered.  The Fellowship is valued at $3,500 for the school year.  The proceeds of the award may be used by the student to assist with his or her tuition and community service work as they see fit.

Allcott Fellowship recipients are expected to represent the Department of Allied Health Sciences at the School of Medicine Community Service Day by presenting a poster on their contribution to community service.

How to Apply:

  1. Complete and submit the Allied Health Sciences departmental scholarship application.
  2. Complete and submit the Allcott Fellowship application.
  3. Submit one letter of recommendation commending your community service.

The Thorpe / Mitchell Diversity Leadership Development Award

The Thorpe/Mitchell Fund seeks to increase the diversity of underrepresented minority students into the diagnostic and therapeutic disciplines at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Department of Allied Health Sciences.  The Fund provides scholarships and is important in the development of a flexible, coordinated, and collaborative pathway for recruiting, retaining, and graduating underrepresented minority students from the Allied Health Sciences.  In addition, the Fund will support faculty diversity leadership development in order to enhance the presence of underrepresented minority students in the department.

The Thorpe / Mitchell Diversity Leadership Development Fund honors Dr. Robert Thorpe and Mrs. Brenda Mitchell.  Dr. Thorpe has served as a mentor to countless students and faculty members as a professor in the Division of Radiologic Science from 1973 to 2007. He was Associate Chair/AHEC Director in the Department of Allied Health Sciences from 1986 to 2001.  Mrs. Mitchell, who currently serves as the Associate Chair for Student Services, has been AHEC Operations for the Department of Allied Health Sciences since 2001. She has also been a faculty member in the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences since 1996.  Both Dr. Thorpe and Mrs. Mitchell, the co-founding donors of this award, are passionate about mentoring and encouraging others to excel and achieve their highest goals.
