Inaugural DAHS faculty awards honor Dr. Susan Beck and Melissa Culp

The awards, offered every other year, honor faculty members who have served the DAHS for three or more years and have made significant contributions of leadership and excellence.

The Department of Allied Health Sciences honored three of its faculty members on Thursday, December 8, 2016, with the creation of three inaugural awards. Melissa Culp, with the Division of Radiologic Science, is the 2016 recipient of the DAHS Innovation and Achievement Award. Dr. Susan Beck, director for the Division of Clinical Laboratory Science, received the DAHS Leadership Award. Dr. Elizabeth R. Crais received the inaugural Lee McLean Award for Excellence in Faculty Mentoring in November. The awards will recognize faculty members every other year for their dedication to the DAHS. 

The DAHS Innovation and Achievement Award honors faculty members who have achieved the following: 

  • Three or more years in the DAHS at UNC-Chapel Hill
  • Any rank (tenure or non-tenure track)
  • Excellence in teaching, research, service or a combination
  • A record of innovation in teaching, research, service (or a combination)
  • Evidence of collaboration and forward thinking leadership (e.g. helping to move the program or profession forward). 

In their nominations, DAHS faculty and staff mentioned the following about Culp:

“Melissa is loved by her students for her commitment to teaching and her ability to prepare them as ideal competitors in an intense imaging market.”

“Melissa Culp has proven to be a model academician and educator, a leader in global radiology outreach, and a supportive and creative colleague.”

During the celebration, Culp credited her division’s team in for their guidance, mentorship, and hard work over the years.

The DAHS Innovation and Achievement Award honors faculty members who have achieved the following:

  • Six or more years in DAHS at UNC-Chapel Hill
  • Rank of associate or full professor (tenure or non-tenure track)
  • Excellence in teaching, research, service or a combination
  • Sustained contribution in area(s) of expertise
  • Contributions that have advanced the mission of DAHS
  • Evidence of continuing contributions

Dr. Susan Beck’s nominations highlighted the following:

“She has the respect of the entire faculty and their appreciation for her sustained leadership.”

“Dr. Beck has provided consistent and thoughtful leadership, mentored junior faculty and has a gift of bringing out the best efforts in both faculty and students.”

“I’ve really been able to work with some wonderful people, and I’ve always been impressed by people in this department,” Beck said.

She also thanked those in leadership roles in our department, including Dr. Stephen Hooper, current DAHS chair.

“We should not take for granted the collegiality we have in this department. I’m very honored.”
