Info for Fieldwork Supervisors

Message to fieldwork supervisors and coordinators: In occupational therapy we all benefit from a culture of giving back to the profession through student supervision. Yet, supervision and teaching of a budding occupational therapist can be hard work.

We faculty UNC truly appreciate your gift of time and knowledge to our students, and we hope that you also receive benefits from the experience of working with our students. Please let us know how we can best support you, and provide the resources you need to make fieldwork supervision a growing experience for everyone.

  • Overview of Fieldwork: UNC-Chapel Hill Occupational Science curriculum design includes developmentally sequenced fieldwork experiences throughout the two year course of study. These fieldwork experiences are part of the curriculum beginning with observational fieldwork the first month the students are on campus. The first Fieldwork II experience occurs in the middle of the two year program, giving students in-depth OT experiences to draw upon throughout the second year of coursework. Fieldwork is an integrated and essential part of the UNC curriculum.
  • UNC Curriculum Themes in Fieldwork: As an illustration of the linkage between curriculum and fieldwork, please refer to the table that describes evidence of UNC curriculum themes in the fieldwork sites. Over the course of the academic program, students are exposed to all curriculum themes in fieldwork experiences.
  • Fieldwork I Supervisor Feedback FormWe use this form throughout the curriculum, so students can track their performance at varied sites and as they gain experience. It is intended to be brief, and for supervisors to review it with students before sending it to UNC.
