Best practice in occupational therapy as a related service in schools should be :

  • Student-centered and occupation-based
  • Integrated into the natural environment of the school such as classroom, cafeteria, playground, media center
  • A collaborative partnership with teachers and other educational personnel
  • Focused on functional/educational outcomes; related to NCDPI Standard Course of Study
  • Evidence based

To this end, the following guidance documents are provided for occupational therapy practitioners, EC & school administrators, and families of students with disabilities.  These documents are not NCDPI policy and do not necessarily reflect the views of NCDPI or UNC-CH.  Theses resources are provided to help clarify the role and scope of occupational therapy in schools and meant to serve as tools for OT programs and services.
