Job Opening - Postdoctoral Fellow

THE SENSORY EXPERIENCES PROJECT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA SEEKS POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW TO STUDY SENSORY SUBTYPES IN CHILDREN WITH AUTISM

Department Name: Allied Health Sciences
Position: Postdoctoral Fellow

Description:
The Sensory Experiences Project (SEP), funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, aims to elucidate the nature of unusual sensory experiences in children with autism. A two‐year supplement grant will allow for expansion of the longitudinal aims of SEP to identify specific subtypes of autism and implications for developmental and adaptive outcomes. For more information about SEP, visit our website at www.med.unc.edu/sep.

The post‐doctoral fellow will work under the mentorship of Dr. Grace Baranek, Principal Investigator, and collaborate with four other investigators, to implement the new large‐scaled longitudinal study. The post‐doctoral fellow will provide leadership on the conceptual and methodological issues related to sensory subtypes in autism, ensure the overall integrity of the study procedures, and provide direction to the research staff with respect to daily operations, recruitment and data management. The post‐doctoral fellow will be responsible for collaborating with the statistician to conduct analyses, and will take lead authorship on theoretical and empirical papers that result from this study. She/he will have opportunities to be involved in other studies on the larger parent grant and potentially co‐author related publications. Other specific responsibilities include overseeing coordination with subject registries, processing IRB applications/amendments, completing NIH progress reports, presentation at scientific conferences related to this study, and writing new grant applications.

Requirements:
A PhD (or doctoral candidate) in psychology, allied health sciences, or related field is required. A comprehensive understanding of measures related to sensory processing, core features of autism, adaptive development, and parental stress is preferred. Likewise, experience with SPSS/SAS, especially for large sample longitudinal models (e.g., mixed models; factor/cluster analysis) is a plus. Candidates interested in a research career related to the scientific study of sensory processing characteristics in autism are especially encouraged to apply.

Start Date: Immediate/negotiable

Application Instructions: To apply, send a letter of interest, a curriculum vitae, and list of three references to: Grace Baranek, Ph.D., Principal Investigator, at grace_baranek@med.unc.edu. Informal inquiries may be addressed to Jeanne Murphy, SEP Project Coordinator, at: jeanne_murphy@med.unc.edu.
