Center for Human Movement Science

The Center for Human Movement Science

The Center for Human Movement Science was established as part of the Division of Physical Therapy within the Department of Allied Health Sciences in 1998 to facilitate collaborative research on human movements at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Human movement science is the unique integration and synthesis of classical knowledge from many basic sciences (i.e. anatomy, physiology, cell biology, physics) for the purposes of studying questions related to the understanding and enhancement of human movement in health individuals as well as individuals whose movement capabilties are challenged by diseases or injuries.

The Center for Human Movement Science occupies 1,000 square feet of space and is comprised of the following units:

  • Subject Preparation Room: used for physical examinations and preparation for in vivo experiments
  • Isometric and Isokinetic Strength Testing Laboratory: used for detailed joint strength evaluations
  • Motion Analysis Laboratory: used for complete in vivo kinematic and kinetic analysis of functional and athletic activities
  • Motor Control Laboratory: used for complicated analysis of human sensory processing and motor control strategies
  • Behavior Observation Laboratory: used for sophisticated analysis of behaviors of children, adults, and the elderly in
keeping with the life-span approach to human movement science
  • Computation Laboratory: equipped with high-tech computers and customized software for data reduction, data analysis and computer simulations of general human movements.
  • Equipment List

Location: Bondurant Hall Lower Level (Room 086)
