Clinical Education

Doctor of Physical Therapy - Clinical Education


The University of North Carolina Physical Therapy program affiliates with approximately 200 excellent clinical education facilities both inside and outside North Carolina. Students are assigned to four 8-12 week clinical affiliations for a total of 36 weeks of full time clinical experience. Students must work with patients of all ages, and a variety of clinical conditions to provide them with the entry-level knowledge and skills they need in the general practice of physical therapy. Students' special interests are considered as clinical assignments are made. Each student must have clinical experience in 3 settings and one site must fulfill service to an underserved facility or area.

Requirements include:

  • General acute care hospital     pediatric or adult
  • Neuromuscular experience     Inpatient rehab, Subacute rehab, Skilled Nursing                       Facility, Outpatient neuro rehab, or Pediatrics
  • Musculoskeletal experience   Outpatient orthopedics, sports
  • Underserved facility or area

                                                 

Rotation 1   1st year mid-June - August  

                      (8 weeks)

Rotation 2   2nd year mid March - April

                      (8 weeks)

Rotation 3   2nd year May - mid-June     

                      (8 weeks)

Rotation 4   3rd year May - August

                      (12 weeks)
