Bio: Dr Thorpe has been a pediatric physical therapist
for 18 years. Previously
she was an elementary educator with an advanced degree in motor development
and motor learning from West Virginia University. Dr. Thorpe
has maintained a clinical practice throughout her 15 years as an
academician and researcher, previously at The University of Texas
Medical Branch and presently at the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill. She is a Pediatric Certified Specialist with
the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). In 2003,
Dr. Thorpe was the recipient of the United Cerebral Palsy Association
Research and Education Foundation, Ethel Hausman Clinical Research
Scholars Award. This award funded Dr. Thorpe’s research in
fitness and strengthening programs for adolescents with cerebral
palsy (CP) as well as her career development activities through 2006. Her
research is currently funded by the National Institutes of Health
and is focused on adults with CP. Dr Thorpe was a co-coordinator
for the very successful first APTA, Section on Pediatrics- sponsored
research summit in October 2004 on “Promotion of Fitness and
Prevention of Secondary Complications for Children with Cerebral
Palsy”. She has traveled around the country to present
her research and ideas about land- and water-based fitness and health
promotion for persons with developmental disabilities.
