July 18, 2009: Evaluation and Intervention for Shoulder Complex Pathologies

This course will meet in Bondurant Hall Room G030.  Click here to return to the continuing education home page for directions and parking information.

Course Description:

This 8 contact hour course will review methods of evaluation and intervention for shoulder complex pathologies commonly seen in clinical practice by occupational and physical therapy practitioners. A practical review of pertinent anatomy and biomechanics will integrate curent evidence for the etiology of shoulder pathologies. Participants will practice special tests used to identify pathologies and review mobilization techniques used to treat hypomobility of the shoulder complex.

Objectives:

  • Apply anatomy and biomechanics of the shoulder complex in clinical problem solving.
  • Synthesize current research related to the etiology, assessment and intervention for the following shoulder pathologies:
    • adhesive capsulitis
    • rotator cuff pathology
    • impingement syndrome
    • SLAP lesions
    • anterior instability
    • thoracic outlet syndrome
  • Demonstrate proficiency in mobilizations for hypomobility of the shoulder complex, as well as special tests for the pathologies covered in the program.

Target Audience:

Content in this course is appropriate for PT, OT, PTA and COTAs. Occupational therapy assistants who attend the course should have a supervisory OT who has been trained in mobilization techniques to provide guidance in clinical practice following the course.
