Remembering Charlene “Billie” M. Nelson, PT, MA, FAPTA

Billie Nelson passed away at her home in Apex, NC, on May 11, 2017.

She was 86 years old. Her friend Ruth Mitchell was by her side.

Billie was an Associate Professor Emerita in the Division of Physical Therapy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She was a respected and well-loved faculty member in the UNC program from 1961 until her retirement in 1993. Though retired, she remained actively engaged in physical therapy education at UNC as an instructor and mentor until 2012. Nationally known as a pioneer in electrotherapeutics and electrodiagnostics, her contributions to service, education and research at local and national levels were offered continuously from the start of her career in 1951 until well past her retirement. She was a lifetime member of the American Physical Therapy Association and received the Lucy Blair Service Award from them in 1981. In 2012, she was named a Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the APTA.

Billie received her Certificate in Physical Therapy (1951) from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia and a BS in Applied Science from the Richmond Professional Institute, College of William and Mary in the same year. In 1964, she earned her MA in Anatomy from Duke University.

Arrangements are being made for a memorial service and internment in Billie’s home town of Leesburg, Florida.
