REHABILITATION SERVICES ADMINISTRATION

LONG-TERM TRAINING FOR THE MENTALLY ILL SCHOLARS GRANT

The Division of Rehabilitation Counseling & Psychology at UNC, Chapel Hill has received a University-Based Long-Term Training grant from the USDOE to expand Psychiatric Rehabilitation specialization in rehabilitation counseling. This new federal grant award will offer scholarship stipends to graduate students who pursue a psychiatric specialization to help cover their tuition (full-time students can get tuition stipends for second year courses; part-time students can get tuition stipends for most of their courses). The five-year grant award is intended to address shortages that exist in the region for trained rehabilitation counselors in psychiatric rehabilitation to work in public vocational rehabilitation and in community-based rehabilitation programs including public, community mental health, as well as to colleges which provide postsecondary supported education.

The project will recruit and serve both full and part-time students, as annual funding levels will permit that could assist approximately 65+ students during the project period. Students must be admitted into the Rehabilitation Counseling & Psychology Program in order to participate in the project. Efforts will be focused on developing clinical training in close proximity to where graduates will seek work. Students can qualify by selecting the psychiatric specialization and entering into an agreement with the USDOE to payback service for the years in which they receive a tuition stipend. Information about the scholars grant program can be obtained by contacting (919) 966-8788 and speaking with the program associate.
