This presentation by Pat Mirenda will focus on AAC strategies for supporting social-communicative interactions between students with autism spectrum disorders and their peers. Using the structure of the Participation Model, we will first discuss the importance of participation in the peer culture as a critical component for the development of social communication. We will then focus on a variety of AAC strategies that can be used to support school-age children and adolescents in this area, including conversation books and speech-generating devices (SGDs). Case studies and videotaped examples will be used to illustrate each of the strategies.
Parking: After 5 p.m. you may park FREE in the Bell Tower Parking Deck (BTD) at UNC located off South Road.
After parking, take the BTD elevator to the 4th floor, turn left, and walk outside to the end of the ramp. Cross the street and walk up the 2 flights of steps to your left. Bondurant Hall will be the brick building straight across the courtyard. The presentation is on the first floor in room G100. If you need to drop someone off who cannot walk up the stairs, do so at the front of Bondurant Hall which is accessible.
