Carolina Center for Public Service Recognizes Sallie Nowell with 2017 Community Engagement Fellowship

The Carolina Center for Public Service has awarded a 2017 Community Engagement Fellowship to Sallie Nowell, a PhD student in the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences.

The Carolina Center for Public Service has awarded Sallie Nowell, a PhD student in the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences, a 2017 Community Engagement Fellowship. The fellows are expected to develop an engaged scholarship project that uses innovative, sustainable approaches to address complex social needs.

Nowell will collaborate with the TEACCH Autism Program to examine the efficacy of their Growing, Living, and Learning with Autism Program (GoriLLA) Group intervention. The TEACCH GoriLLA Group is a parent-assisted intervention for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) targeting social communication and self regulation skills. These areas are important to target in intervention for children with ASD because they are implicated in poor adult outcomes such as employment, social inclusion, and quality of life as compared to peers without ASD.

The research-community partnership between Nowell and TEACCH will allow them to study the GoriLLA Group intervention as it is provided in a community practice setting, rather than a controlled laboratory setting; therefore, results may have direct implications for services provided to children with ASD in North Carolina. This interdisciplinary project incorporates investigators from occupational science, psychology, education, and social work.

The fellowships, which include up to $2,000 each year for program implementation, run from March until November. Fellows are expected to attend six seminars, partner with a community organization, and seek guidance from a UNC-CH faculty member.

Nowell received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Department of Allied Heath Sciences’ Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences. Her doctoral education is supported by the U.S. Department of Education Doctoral Leadership Grant “Interdisciplinary Preparation in Teaching, Leadership, and Service Focused on Young Children with Autism and Their Families.” Linda Watson, EdD, is Nowell’s faculty mentor. 

ABOUT TEACCH Autism Program: The program is a system of seven community regional centers in North Carolina offering services for families affected by ASD throughout their lifespan. The organization also serves as an internationally recognized training program for professionals who work with individuals diagnosed with ASD.
