Clinical Doctorate in Audiology (Au.D.)

The Au.D. program is designed to provide a comprehensive graduate experience for students who wish to pursue a career in clinical audiology. The program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation for Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology, and graduates will be eligible for ASHA and ABA certification and North Carolina state licensure.

Program Objectives 

Our primary goal is to prepare skilled clinicians, qualified to enter clinical practice that serves individuals with hearing loss and auditory disorders. Because our academic program is located in the School of Medicine with close ties to UNC Hospitals, we have unique strengths in the areas of diagnostic and pediatric audiology, hearing aids, cochlear implants, and aural habilitation. The Au.D. program is designed to focus on the development of clinical excellence in both the technical and interpersonal domains. Our intent is to recruit, educate, and graduate a diverse group of individuals who will:

  • Have knowledge and skills to recommend and implement prevention strategies
  • Have knowledge and skills needed to use state of the art instrumentation and assessment procedures and integrate information from a variety of sources in application of intervention strategies
  • Have interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with patients, family members and other professionals representing diverse sociocultural backgrounds
  • Provide leadership and model "Best practice" in the audiology profession
  • Be effective in an interdisciplinary team environment
  • Be knowledgeable and critical consumers of research with the ability to apply and participate in research relevant to clinical practice
  • Be knowledgeable and responsive in legal and ethical practice and effective in the establishment of optimal policy and business aspects of audiology practice
