AMBUCS Scholars Program

AMBUCS offers scholarships to students (U.S. citizens) in their junior/senior year in a bachelor’s degree program, or a graduate program leading to a master’s or doctoral degree. Awards range from $500 to $1,500 annually.

Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation Scholarship

Funds for the education of women. They are awarded according to the guidelines of the foundation . This scholarship is awarded on the basis of need to Christian women who reside in one of the specified states (NC being one of them). Morehead Scholarships

The Foundation seeks the most outstanding, well-rounded students with an emphasis on leadership. Although successful candidates will rank near the top of their class academically, their classroom performance will be complemented by contributions and achievements in non-academic areas. The North Carolina Student Loan Program for Health, Science and Mathematics

Funds provided by the North Carolina General Assembly for need based loans. Only for students are committed to practicing through service in NC.

  • Need Based

    • Grants & Scholarships

James M. Johnston Awards-The Johnston Awards are UNC-Chapel Hill's premier need-based scholarships. Every year approximately 70 entering freshmen are chosen to be Johnston Scholars, based on outstanding high school records and leadership potential.
    • Federal Work-Study

The Federal Work-Study Program provides jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related to your course of study.

    • Loans

The Office of Scholarships and Student Aid administers a number of student loan programs which provide low-interest, long-term loans to undergraduate, graduate and professional students.

  • Non-Need Based

    • Academic Scholarship

Each year the University offers special scholarships to a select group of entering freshmen. These competitive awards recognize and encourage academic excellence. Criteria for academic scholarships include academic achievement, leadership qualities, commitment to service, and potential for success at the University. Financial need is not a consideration. The University seeks to identify students who have earned academic distinction in high school. Because UNC-Chapel Hill is a selective university, competition for these awards is very strong. Approximately 100 new scholarships are awarded each year to an incoming class of over 3,500 students. The recipients of these awards demonstrate impressive academic and extracurricular achievements.

      • Carolina Scholars Awards Program

provides annual awards of $7,500 to students from North Carolina and $15,000 to out-of-state students. It represents the most academically competitive of scholarships sponsored by the University.

      • Pogue Scholarships

were established to attract the most outstanding students from North Carolina to the University, with special emphasis on minority applicants. Pogue Scholarships provide a renewable award of $7,500 to students who, in addition to solid academic performance and evidence of strong leadership potential, demonstrate an abiding commitment to their local communities, embrace diversity, and eagerly identify ways to implement positive change.

      • William Richardson Davie Scholarships

provide renewable awards of $3,250 to in-state students and $12,000 to out-of-state students who exhibit high academic achievement and potential for leadership at the University.

      • Old Well Scholarships

provide renewable awards of at least $2,500 to students from North Carolina who come to the University with an exemplary academic record. Additional criteria for these awards may include county of residence and high school attended.

      • College Fellows Scholarships

provide renewable awards of $2,500 to high-achieving students from North Carolina.

      • College-Sponsored National Merit Awards

are annual awards of $1,000 (or $2,000 in the case of substantial financial need) to National Merit finalists who have not been offered another type of National Merit award and have notified the National Merit Scholarship Corporation that UNC-Chapel Hill is their first college choice. Recipients of National Merit’s one-time $2,500 Merit Scholarship will be eligible to receive the annual $1,000 college-sponsored award after their freshman year.
