UNC-Chapel Hill Physical Therapy MS Scholarship

Improve the Quality of Care

Ms (29).JPG

Our goal is to improve the quality of care for individuals with MS by increasing the number of physical therapists who have specialized MS knowledge, clinical expertise, and experience. To reach this goal, the MS Scholarship Committee seeks to create a permanent MS Scholarship endowment at the Medical Foundation of NC, Inc. that will generate the annual investment income necessary to provide scholarship support for four students attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Doctor of Physical Therapy Program and the resources needed for faculty curriculum development.

The UNC MS Scholarship has allowed me to focus my graduate studies on neurological disease, treatment, and rehabilitation, with a concentration in Multiple Sclerosis. I have the opportunity to train in this specialty through guided coursework, clinical affiliations, research, and community outreach. I aspire to work with patients with MS and other neurological conditions to improve their quality of life, help them gain independence, and encourage physical activity. As a physical therapist, I hope to play a crucial role in the lives of these clients through quality patient care while pursuing my passion of helping people."
Erica Byrne, 2009-10 MS Scholarship Recipient, UNC-EDPT Class of 2010
Areas of Interest: Adult neurological, working with individuals with MS

"My deepest appreciation to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Eastern North Carolina Chapter, and the scholarship committee for the opportunity to participate in the continuation of this most exciting and challenging program. It is an honor to represent the UNC Division of Physical Therapy, its faculty and staff, and my classmates. I look forward to the increased focus on the study of neurological disease and in particular, Multiple Sclerosis, afforded by this most generous scholarship. It will allow the opportunity for additional emphasis and study of MS, patient care and treatment, as well as other areas; including but not limited to, attending MS conferences, specialized clinical affiliations, creating community awareness and fundraising. While the challenges remain formidable, this partnership of the UNC Division of Physical Therapy and the National MS Society should continue to make great strides in advancing the goal of keeping people with MS moving.

Build the Endowment

We welcome contributions from alumni, colleagues, friends, and others to endow a permanent UNC-Chapel Hill MS Scholarship. The endowed scholarship will enable the Division of Physical Therapy to attract exceptional students from the United States and around the world to study in Chapel Hill. Investment income from the scholarship endowment will be used for annual student scholarships and support for faculty curriculum development.

I am very honored and excited to be a part of this inaugural specialty track devoted to enhancing my awareness surrounding the rehabilitative treatment of patients with neurological disorders, especially Multiple Sclerosis. I would like to thank the National MS Society, the Eastern North Carolina Chapter, and especially the Scholarship Committee for giving me the opportunity to develop my interest in working with this special patient population. I look forward to getting involved with the community and representing the UNC Division of Physical Therapy competently, professionally, and compassionately. I will use this financial aid to help me to expand my knowledge base by attending MS Society conferences and meetings, taking continuing education courses, and being actively involved in service endeavors.

“My selection for the Physical Therapy MS scholarship is not only a huge honor, but also an exciting opportunity to work closely with the MS patient population in North Carolina. The additional coursework, neurological focused clinical affiliations, class projects, and patient advocacy through the National MS Society, Eastern NC Chapter will expand my knowledge base and experience of those patients and families affected by the disease. The knowledge I gain will enable me to educate my classmates and future colleagues, resulting in high quality care for MS patients in NC and nationwide.”
