The mission of the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies is to conduct, coordinate, and promote basic and clinical research on the causes, prevention, and treatment of alcohol use disorder and related disorders.

Center Goals

The Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies and the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program have four immediate goals:

  • To identify the genes that increase the risk of alcohol-related problems and explore gene therapy.
  • To make breakthrough discoveries on the basic mechanisms of addiction and translate the findings into improved treatment and prevention.
  • To establish professorships dedicated to research on addiction, alcoholic liver disease, and fetal alcohol syndrome.
  • To expand the treatment program into neighboring communities.
