On Sept 9, 2014, the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill joined organizations all over the world in helping to increase awareness of damage caused by prenatal alcohol exposure. At 9:09 a.m. the Bowles Center scientists displayed a large Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder prevention-directed poster on UNC’s main campus, catching the attention of passing students, faculty, and staff. Images of the group’s activities were posted on social media and were included in the wave of comparable photos and videos posted around the world by groups displaying the same poster image. This international campaign is expected to have reached an extremely broad audience with the message that in order to prevent birth defects, drinking alcohol during pregnancy should be avoided.
