Loyalty Fund Scholarships

The UNC School of Medicine Medical Alumni Loyalty Fund scholarship program was established in 1966 with a modest stipend to six students. Because of generous alumni support, the program now provides over 50 full in-state tuition scholarships per year based on need, merit and/or demonstrated leadership. The awards for 2007-08 are $10,200 for medical students and $2,000 for Allied Health Sciences students.

Academic/Merit Scholarships

Each year a number of Medical Alumni Loyalty Fund scholarships are awarded to incoming students based on merit. The Admissions Office will recommend recipients to the Medical Alumni Association. These scholarship awards recognize and encourage academic excellence. Criteria for these scholarships include academic achievement, leadership qualities, and commitment to service. The recipients of these awards demonstrate impressive academic and extracurricular achievements. The scholarships can continue through four years of study, as long as students maintain satisfactory academic performance. There is no application process and selected students are notified by the UNC School of Medicine Office of Admissions.

Merit scholarships are also awarded to those students receiving honors based on their performance during the second and third years of medical school.

Need-Based Scholarships

Need-based scholarships are awarded to students with demonstrated financial need. Other criteria such as leadership qualities and commitment to service are also considered. Some scholarships also have additional criteria, ranging from North Carolina county of residence to career choice.

The Lucius Blanchard Carolina Family Loyalty Fund Scholarships & Loans

Outstanding need-based applicants to the UNC School of Medicine are selected to hold the Lucius Blanchard Carolina Family Loyalty Fund Scholarship throughout their four years of medical school. The same students will also receive the Lucius Blanchard Carolina Family Loyalty Fund Loan Endowment award that will provide Blanchard Scholars with an interest-free loan of approximately $20,000 each per year. Recipients will have up to 10 years after graduation to repay their interest –free loans.

Scholarships for Matriculated  Students

In the spring of the year students that have matriculated to the School of Medicine are invited to apply for a one-year Medical Alumni Loyalty Fund Scholarship for the upcoming academic year. A committee comprised of representatives from Student Affairs, Financial Aid, Admissions, Alumni Affairs and the Medical Foundation of North Carolina, Inc. selects recipients. Criteria for selection include demonstrated financial need, academic achievement, leadership qualities and commitment to service. Consideration for career choices (Primary Care) is given to those students entering their fourth year.
