Established in 1955 on the 75th anniversary of the founding of the School of Medicine the Distinguished Service Award was created to recognize those who had made important contributions to the establishment and early growth of the four-year medical school. The award was designed to honor alumni and friends whose distinguished careers and unselfish contributions to society have added luster and prestige to the University and its School of Medicine.
The UNC School of Medicine Medical Alumni Loyalty Fund scholarship program was established in 1966 with a modest stipend to six students. The program now provides over 60 scholarships per year. We are fortunate to have a number of these scholarships endowed, and combined with annual gifts from our alumni, we are able to reach more students. Scholarships are awarded based on demonstrated altruism, integrity, leadership, diversity and a commitment to community service.
The Lucius Blanchard Carolina Family Loyalty Fund Scholarships are awarded annually to four first‐year medical students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, strong curiosity, leadership qualities, and commitment to service and, in some cases, financial need.
The Medical Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professorships are intended to honor mid-career faculty with a track record of substantial leadership in teaching medical students as well as educational innovation. The goal is to help the Professors serve as agents of change within the School of Medicine and ambassadors for the School of Medicine, underscoring our commitment to national leadership and innovation in medical education.
