Selection Process

Applicants must complete an Application for Appointment to the Housestaff of The University of North Carolina Hospitals, and provide a letter of interest, a personal statement, a copy of their curriculum vitae, a copy of their USMLE transcript, and a copy of their medical transcripts. Also requested are letters of recommendation (see below). Requirements for further consideration of the application are that the applicant (1) holds an M.D. degree or equivalent, (2) completes an anesthesiology, neurology, psychiatry, or physical medicine or rehabilitation training program prior to onset of fellowship in an accredited residency program, and (3) demonstrates evidence of interest and ability to carry out research, publication, clinical, and academic pursuits.  Please note, we will be participating in the Pain Management Fellowship match for fellowships starting academic year 2014-2015.  There is no centralized application for the match.  Please complete the application requirements listed above.   

Pain Management Fellowship

Number of Positions for 2014-2015: 2-3

Duration of fellowship:  12 months

Applications accepted beginning:  March 1, 2013

Deadline for submission:  August 5, 2013

Timeline:

June 5, 2013:  NRMP Match opens for registration

August 7, 2013:  Rank order list entry begins

September 25, 2013:  Rank order list deadline

October 9, 2013:  Match Day

July 1, 2014:  Fellowship begins

The letters of recommendation should include the following:

• Dean's Letter
• One letter from your residency director at your training institution
• Two additional letters of reference (one letter preferably from the Director of Pain Services)
• The application package, personal statement, letters, etc., must be sent to Dr. William S. Blau at UNC-Anesthesiology Department, N2198 North Wing, UNC Hospitals, CB #7010, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-7010.

Selected candidates will interview with the pain management faculty.
