Chief Residents' Welcome

Welcome to the University of North Carolina’s Department of Anesthesiology Residency Program!  UNC is a wonderful place to train where learners will become well-rounded, clinically adept anesthesiologists.  Our residency program has a lot to offer, and we’re excited to share what makes UNC a perfect place to call home!

UNC Hospitals is a Level 1 Trauma center located in the charming city of Chapel Hill, within the Research Triangle.  Residents spend the vast majority of their time at UNC Hospitals, a 900-plus-bed system consisting of N.C. Memorial Hospital, N.C. Children’s Hospital, N.C. Neurosciences Hospital, N.C. Women’s Hospital, and the UNC Comprehensive Cancer Center as well as the Hillsborough location an 86 bed hospital.

The clinical base year is comprised of rotations that will offer a broad, yet pertinent, foundation before entering the operating room.  Thereafter, the Clinical Anesthesia years are spent caring for a diverse patient population, including North Carolina’s most complex patients.  The abundant clinical experiences offered here allow you to develop and hone skills that will serve you exceptionally well for the rest of your career.  From day one, trainees are exposed to a finely tuned educational experience and an outstanding, collegial collection of mentors. The educational environment and family atmosphere are truly hallmarks of our program and the cornerstone of the UNC residency experience.

In addition to showcasing a program that allows trainees to pursue their career interests –, whether it is education, fellowship, research, or private practice—our program also affords the luxury of living in the Research Triangle!  The Triangle, i.e. Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh, has been named on several Top Ten lists of 2015 and 2016, including America’s Next Boom Towns, Best Places for Young Professionals, and Best Places to Raise a Family!  The sprawling region allows for a low cost of living, great job opportunities for spouses, and a plethora of activities for all to enjoy.  It is unique in that you can get a small town feel or a big city vibe, depending on where you choose to live—all within an easy commute to the hospital.

We would love for you to further explore what the UNC Anesthesiology program has to offer!  Please feel free to contact any of us with questions that you may have about our program.  UNC attracts top candidates each year, and we look forward to continuing this tradition of excellence!  GO HEELS!

Sincerely,
