Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Division

The Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine provides services for all critically ill or injured infants, children, and adolescents admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of the NC Children’s Hospital. Our division works collaboratively with all other pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties in the care of our patients.

Overview

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at NC Children’s Hospital is a state of the art 20-bed facility where multidisciplinary teams care for a wide variety of critically ill children. All rooms are private with windows and areas for parents and care givers.

As part of our important continuum of care, we provide coordination with all medical and surgical specialties. All forms of respiratory support including high frequency oscillation and jet ventilation are available. Other modalities such as Renal Replacement Therapies and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) or Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) are utilized in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for neonates, children and adolescents with organ failure. Care of the neonatal and pediatric cardiac surgery patient is routinely provided in the PICU.

The pediatric critical care medicine division consists of 8 faculty members with subspecialty training in pediatric critical care, cardiac anesthesiology, and cardiac critical care. The UNC PICU includes robust infrastructure for clinical quality improvement and family centered care through a partnership with the NC Children’s Hospital Center for Clinical Excellence.
