Where are they now??


Omar Halawa


Omar received a Doris Duke research award to spend a year working with the TRYUMPH group to launch the BURN Help Trial. Omar coordinated the start-up of the study and participant enrollment and data collection from summer 2009 – June 2010. Omar is currently a resident at Oregon Health and Science University Hospital in Portland, Oregon.


Katie Hunold


Katie served as study coordinator for the Older Adult CRASH project during her junior and senior year at UNC. Along the way, Katie did the data analysis for two published manuscripts and co-authored two other peer-reviewed publications. Katie is currently a medical student at the University of Virginia.


Young Lee


Young joined the TRYUMPH team as a volunteer undergrad student working 10-12 hours a week in the lab in January 2009. He continued to work with the team on data analysis and manuscripts until he graduated in May 2011. Young is currently a second year medical student at Vanderbuilt University.


John Narron


Dr. Narron graduated from the Brody School of Medicine at ECU and completed his internship University of Southern California Medical Center. He spent the summer of 2010 working in the research group where he performed data analyses and assisted with manuscripts. He is currently completing his residency in Anesthesia at Penn State Hershey.


Danielle Orrey


Danielle originally was hired for 10 hours a week to conduct telephone surveys for Project CRASH. After only 6 months with the TRYUMPH team, she gave up a full scholarship to attend UNC and earn a Master’s Degree of Urban Planning to spend the next 3 years completing prerequisites for medical school. Dani was hired into a full time position and contributed to many areas of our work, eventually taking over coordination of the BURN Help Trial. Dani is currently a first year medical student at UNC Chapel Hill.


Brandon Roane


Brandon was hired as a Research Assistant right after graduating with his undergraduate degree at Duke University in May 2009. He continued to work with the TRYUMPH team for the next year, completing data collection for the BURN Help Trial. Brandon quickly learned a database program and designed several study and tracking databases for the group. Brandon is currently a third year medical student at UNC Chapel Hill.


Maggie Tomecka


Maggie joined the research team as a volunteer and worked with the group to complete the BURN Help trial. She completed several abstracts and a manuscript during her time with the group. Maggie is currently a resident with the department of Anesthesiology at UNC Chapel Hill.


Whitney Westphal


Whitney joined the research group as the research administrative assistant in the Fall of 2010 and worked until May 2011. She moved to the area from South Dakota with her husband who was a new resident at Duke University. Whitney is currently living in Kenya, serving as a 6th grade teacher while her husband completes a 3 month medical rotation at Tenwek Hospital in Bomet, Kenya.


Abbey Whittington:


Abbey joined the TRYUMPH team as the first data manager in June 2010. In fall 2011, she took an open Research Assistant position working with the Industry Sponsored Clinical Trials team in order to gain her 1000 patient contact hours needed for her application to PA school. Abbey had her first baby in Spring 2012 and is currently working on her last classes and applications for PA school.
