Pediatric Sedation Simulation Course

Phelps SmallThe Division of Pediatric Anesthesia at the University of North Carolina developed and continues to lead the pediatric pain sedation and consult service. This service provides virtually all sedations for the pediatric patients at UNC, exclusive of emergency room and ICU patients. This simulation course was designed as part of the credentialing process for sedation nurse practitioners and registered nurses, who also complete Team STEPPS and PALS training, and a series of computer-based learning modules. The simulation based training and credentialing process was developed by Dr. Janey Phelps in collaboration with members of the UNC Pediatric Sedation Committee. The simulation scenarios focus on recognition and intervention of critical adverse events, as well as TeamSTEPPs communication skills, patient triage, and obtaining history from family members. The simulation course consists of 4 scenarios with a debriefing session after each scenario, and is aligned with the sedation training objectives of the Society for Pediatric Sedation.
