Dr. Shirley Schipper graduated medical school and completed the Family Medicine Residency Program at the University of Alberta. She has been with the Department of Family Medicine, University of Alberta, since 2001 and is currently an Associate Professor. Shirley was the Clinic Director for the Grey Nuns Family Medicine Academic Teaching Clinic from 2002-2008, where she also has a clinical practice. She was the Director of Postgraduate Medical Education for Family Medicine from 2008-2012. In this lunch discussion Dr. Schipper will give an overview of the Competency-Based Achievement System (CBAS), which was designed to measure competence using 3 main principles: formative feedback, guided self-assessment, and continuity of supervision. The CBAS provides a framework for meaningful interactions between residents and advisors. Residents use the CBAS to organize and review their feedback, to guide their own assessment of their progress, and to discern their future learning needs. Advisors use the CBAS to monitor, guide, and verify residents’ knowledge and skills in higher order competencies. By focusing on specific clinical domains and behaviour, the CBAS enables residents and advisors to make formative assessments and to communicate their findings. Feedback indicates that the CBAS is a user-friendly and helpful system to assess competence. |
