THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL
BBSP
Research Areas

Welcome

The Biological and Biomedical
Sciences Program is a new,
unified mechanism by which
prospective students apply for graduate
study in the biological or biomedical
sciences at UNC Chapel Hill. Students interested
in any of the BBSP research areas apply to BBSP and
are admitted to UNC with no formal commitment to a PhD program. After completing their first year of study students leave BBSP and join a thesis lab and matriculate into one of 12 participating PhD programs. During their first year BBSP students are part of small, interest based groups led by several faculty members. These groups meet frequently and provide a research community for students until they join a degree granting program. A key feature of the BBSP is that there is no common curriculum or required set of courses. If you have very specific interests you can focus right away on courses and labs in one program. If your interests are interdisciplinary or broad, you can sample multiple research areas. The choice is yours! We invite you to explore this site and find out more about how our program works, the exciting research opportunities available to you and why UNC is a great place to be a scientist.
