THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL

About UNC

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill leads the South in the amount of extramural support for its research programs. During fiscal year 2007, investigators at UNC received a total of $610.7 million in research grants and contracts from a wide variety of federal and non-federal sources. The School of Medicine brought in almost half of that funding, $298.5 million. In addition, UNC launched a major fund raising campaign that to date has raised in excess of $1 billion in new endowment funds. It is anticipated that these funds will assure ongoing excellence in these programs and the successful development of new thematic areas well into the 21st century.

Unlike many institutions, in which the Medical Center is sited at substantial distance from other campus components, UNC is truly one single university in that the College of Arts & Sciences campus and the Health Affairs campus (Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Public Health) are immediately adjacent to one another. Such proximity between these disciplines fosters ongoing collaboration between faculty investigators from the entire spectrum of disciplines. This arrangement encourages the formal and informal exchanges that enhance the concepts and resources of individual researchers, often resulting in new, cross-disciplinary collaborations.
