Curriculum

The Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics has set up a curriculum geared to challenge students in their pursuit for knowledge. The curriculum is designed to emphasize basic skills and principles, and yet be sufficiently flexible to allow students to focus on different research areas.


Required Courses:

  • BIOC 701 – Research Topics in Biochemistry (2)
  • BIOC 702/703 – Advanced Biochemistry Laboratory (2 credit hours per rotation or equivalent with BBSP)
  • BIOC 712 – Scientific Writing (3) – for Ph.D. students only
  • BIOC 715 – Oral Scientific Presentation (1) – required beginning with the class of 2007 and on
  • BIOC 994 – Doctoral Dissertation (3) – 1 course required each semester


Core Courses:

  • BIOC 505 – Molecular Biology (3)
  • BIOC 601 – Enzyme Properties, Mechanisms and Regulation (3)
  • BIOC 631/632 – Advanced Molecular Biology I and II
  • BIOC 643/644 – Cell Biology I and II (3)
  • BIOC 655 – Case Studies in Structural Molecular Biology, Including Structure Analysis (3)
  • BIOC 650-678 – Physical Biochemistry (3 credit hours = 1 core course)


Doctoral Research Track Course*:

  • BIOC 994 – Doctoral Dissertation (3) – 1 course required each semester

*Our program does not offer direct admissions for a Master's degree, but this degree option can be made available to students under rare circumstances.
