About Us

The Molecular & Cellular Biophysics training program (MCBP) is a NIH funded training program for quantitative and physical biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The MCBP exists both to provide a flexible vehicle for training graduate students who share a passion for biophysics and to enhance the research and training community of its diverse group of faculty and students.

The MCBP Faculty consists of ~40 world-renowned researchers who work in all major areas of modern biophysics, including computational biology, single molecule analysis, cellular imaging, proteomics, and structural/mechanistic biology.

Program Trainees enroll in one of ten PhD-granting programs at UNC, including seven affiliated with the Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program (BBSP), as well as the Chemistry, Applied Physical Sciences, and Physics and Astronomy Departments. The Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Curriculum and the Biochemistry & Biophysics Department have degree requirements designed to optimally accommodate MCBP trainees, although enrollment in other degree-granting units (especially Chemistry) is also common. Completion of MCBP requirements merits a degree with “Concentration in Biophysics” and is an official certificate granting program.
